In the latest video on the Youtube channel, I talked about how hollow-handled survival knives are a gimmick and should be avoided by anybody who actually plans on using their gear. The space in a knife handle is so small that it’s not worth it to compromise the reliability and sturdiness of a knife in such a dramatic way just to create such a small storage space. If that’s all the gear you are bringing (which is probably not a great idea anyway) you can fit it in a pouch on your sheath, or in a pocket, or pretty much anywhere else.
Here are the knives mentioned in the video:
Couldn’t agree more. If you’re looking for a proper survival knife remember that it needs to be able to take punishment – hacking, chopping, cutting or ax-work. Hollow handle gimmick knives are simply not sturdy enough to really last out there under any rigorous use. There’s a good list over here: https://www.camp4.com/best-survival-knife/ . I like knives like the Cold Steel Recon Scout or Fällkniven A1. I know we all have our own peculiar preferences. Their list also includes the Ka-Bar, and while I love the idea of owning a piece of history it just feels like this knife is starting to show its age a bit. Go get a modern durable survival knife that can actually perform the tasks you might require of it to stay alive!
