Thrunite TH-20 headlamp – Good, bad, or ugly?

Thrunite contacted me and asked if I wanted to review their TH-20 headlamp. It was superb timing as I was actually looking to get a better headlamp than the typical 10-15 dollar version. you can find it on Amazon here: https://amzn.to/2KlUJ16

They sent me the headlamp, but I was not otherwise compensated for doing the review. I always tell companies that want to send me stuff that they will get an honest review, the good and the bad. So after using it for a few weeks, here it is:

THE GOOD:

– Output: even with a standard AA battery you can get 250 lumens in bright mode. Plenty bright enough to light up a whole room or campsite. With the 14500 battery it is literally twice as bright, with over 500 lumens.
– Long life: The ‘firefly’ mode of .3 lumens lasts a ridiculous 14 days. Great for SHTF or disaster scenarios when batteries might be hard to come by.
– Toughness: the body is all metal so it is much more robust than a typical headlamp. The battery compartment screws on, it doesn’t just snap in place. It is drop resistant and waterproof to 6ft
– I really like the method of switching modes. You just hold the button down until you get to your desired brightness.

THE BAD:

There is nothing that is specifically bad in my opinion. It lacks certain features that other headlamps have, like red light and switching between flood or beam, but none of those are features I found myself using all that often anyway. Price is higher at $30, but I do feel like you are getting a better headlamp and I don’t see the price as unreasonable.

I will continue using it, as it is the best headlamp I have now, and we’ll see how it holds up over time. I think the long battery life, and simple but tough design make it great for my uses (camping and basic preparedness)
