Gear, Prepping

The real story behind how the Rule The Wasteland Survival Fishing Kit came to be

If you’ve been watching the Youtube videos recently, you know I have spent months putting together what I believe is the best mini survival fishing kit on the market.

The Rule The Wasteland Survival Fishing Kit.

What most of you don’t know is how or why this came about.

It started as a project and became an obsession.

It was actually quite random; While doing some very basic (and sorely needed) organizing of the gear you see behind me in many of my recent videos, I came across a tackle box I have had for quite some time. It was full of totally random fishing gear, and had not been put together with any conscious thought to making a decent collection of gear, and certainly not with SHTF or prepping in mind. It was also much too big to include in a bug out bag.

I decided, fairly spontaneously, to use some of this gear to make a smaller kit that I could put in a bug out bag or vehicle, or carry on my person. I quickly discovered that I didn’t have nearly enough of the actual items I would want to put in such a kit.

I also realized that buying one or two of everything I needed would make the kit very expensive, and buying the components in bulk would allow me to make each kit much cheaper – but only if I made a lot of them! Thus I progressed from trying to put a single kit together for my own Bug-out-bag to making it something I could offer to others as well.

Since I didn’t need (or want to personally pay for) 50 to 100 kits, or more, I decided I would make it available for sale so every prepper out there had a chance to get the same great kit as I made for myself, at a lower cost than they would be able to on their own, and with a LOT less work.

Seriously, you would be surprised how difficult it was to get some of the aspects of this kit figured out. I had to pay for many samples of various components to figure out which would work, from the tin itself, to the lures, hooks, etc.

They not only had to be the right item, but they had to be cost effective, available in bulk, and fit in the small kit along with the other components.

The fishing line itself was the most difficult component. While not the most expensive, fishing line does not typically come in any configuration suitable for putting in a kit like this. the smallest of spools are usually almost as big as the entire Kit I wanted to make, or bigger, and I could not find a feasible way to make loose loops or put bulk line on bobbins / spools that didn’t take MASSIVE amounts of time and effort individually wrapping them.

I had to basically invent and custom order the small, flat spools I ended up using, as I couldn’t find anything similar already available for sale anywhere, and that took a considerable amount of time, and effectively tripled the cost of the line.

Fortunately I was still able to keep the overall price of the kit reasonable, and this extra effort allowed to me to create a product that has WAY more line than the others on the market, AND at a smaller overall size, in a better container. In my opinion this all makes it the best one out there by far.
